The Nantahala National Forest has contracted with the University of Tennessee to conduct various social and economic surveys associated with the Upper Tellico OHV Trail System. The Foothills Conservancy - MORGANTON, NC - Foothills Conservancy of North Carolina, on behalf of the N.C. Wildlife Resources Commission, has secured a contract with The Lutz Family Partnership to purchase 649 acres along almost four miles of National Wild and Scenic Wilson Creek in Caldwell County for $7 million dollars......Read all the details here .

NC Wildlife Commission Establishes New Rule Making "Powerbait" and Flavored/Scented Bait Substances Illegal

A New rule enacted by the NC Wildlife Resources Commission defining artificial lures and natural bait becomes effective July 1, 2008, when fishing on designated public mountain trout waters.  Read all the details  here .

Winston-Salem & Greensboro Monthly Magazines Feature

I'll be getting together with Michael Breedlove of Media General  Magazines to do a feature on our Fly Fishing Schools and all that we do here at JWFF.  Also, we'll be getting a feature in the "Ask the Expert" section of the magazines.  Funny, I don't know if expert is a title I'd use, but we'll certainly give it our best shot.  You can view the article  here at the Greensboro Monthly website.

Culprit VIP/Pro Staff - I am pleased to become a VIP/Pro Staff member for Culprit.  Culprit has a great new line of popping bugs for largemouth and smallmouth bass and we look forward to representing their product on our guided fishing trips.

NC Trout Stocking

All streams designated Delayed Harvest or Hatchery Supported will be receiving all the fish they will get before the first Saturday in June.  NC Wildlife wants to avoid any potential drought related issues as was the case last year.

FLY TYER MAGAZINE features our friend and local fly tyer Anthony Hipps.....for fans for the Soft Body Popper who remember last years great article that appeared in Fly Tyer magazine by Anthony Hipps on tying his soft body poppers, there will be another article highlighting another of Anthony's fly the Hipps Hellcraw, formerly the Hipps Helgrammite, a deadly fly I have used personally and can testify to its effectiveness.  The new article will appear in the upcoming spring issue of Fly Tyer so be sure to get your copy.  For those interesting in tying the Soft Body popper, Anthony informed me that Ward Bean's Website, Warmwater Fly Tyer, has the step by step photo sequence of the popper, and more info on the fly than was actually printed in the Fly Tyer spring 2006 feature.   Also, Anthony has a great jig fly article in the Winter 2007 issue of Fly Tyer, a great piece as well.

Protect Your Waters

A great site with lots of information about managing and dealing with invasive aquatic plants, weeds, and more.  This is a concern for all anglers, as we must constantly address the spreading of nuisance plants and organisms.  They can "hitch a ride" on our clothing and gear, and then released into other bodies of water---and potentially become established and create drastic results.  Learn more  here .
