CURRENT STREAM CONDITIONS

Real time water flow data are available via the US Geological Survey website. Data are available for the lower 48 states. In reading real time water flow data, note the amount of flow in cfs and compare the number with the top graph on the page. The triangles indicates what normal seasonal flow for that time of the year is. The amount or percentage above or below that line indicates the deviation from the norm. For summer of 2007 most flows are well below the line of triangles, indicating abnormally dry conditions or moderate to severe and even in some cases extreme drought. Spikes or high deviations represent a spate or thunderstorm in an undammed stream, while a spike on a dammed stream like the Smith River in Virginia represents generation or water release from the dam.
