Delayed Harvest Streams were restocked March 1-3, 2010
March marks the beginning of 'new life' for delayed harvest waters. Stockings will take place during the week of March 1 and run through the first part of the following week. Expect good fishing from the central mountains north, as we have pretty good flows and better than last fall. I heard from David Deaton at the Armstrong Hatchery in Marion, NC, where all of the fish for waters in our area come from, and he indicated that barring any major weather issues NCWRC and the Hatchery will proceed with stocking on a normal schedule.

TU Asks For MT Drilling Setbacks
Apparently residents of the Montana valley where the movie "The Horse Whisperer" was filmed aren't the only ones who think that setting up drilling equipment on the banks of the Boulder River is a bad idea. Trout Unlimited just stepped up to the plate and asked the state to reconsider the lack of restrictions in recently auctioned oil and gas leases. "The conservation group is pushing for half-mile setbacks on the best trout streams in the BLM's Billings region, which includes a big chunk of the Yellowstone and Stillwater rivers and a small portion of the Boulder River north of Big Timber." Daniel Person in the Bozeman Daily Chronicle. To learn

Yellowstone National Park Road Fall/Early Winter 2009/2010
There's a major road construction project getting underway which will effectively shut down access to many of the park's pristine wilderness areas. The road work is to bring the roads up to snuff with current use levels and also to work within the short working season here. By October snow will prevent any more work from being done. I contacted our friends at Craig Mathew's shop Blue Ribbon Flies in West Yellowstone and here is the scoop I got, you can click here and download the entire Park road construction plan.
Drawing Flies 365
The art /drawing blog of artist Jeff Kennedy. Jeff does some amazing stuff utilizing a number of different mediums in drawing and painting flies. Some of the most unique work you will see anywhere. He recently did a project called drawing flies 365, a year long project in which he did just that- - drew or painted a fly for each day of the year. Trout in the Classroom NC
The Blue Ridge Chapter of TU in Winston Salem has launched Trout in the Classroom this year. According to member Steve Hennings Ledford High School in Thomasville and Sugar Loaf Elementary near Taylorsville both have active Trout in the Classroom projects. They have hatched eggs, and have raised them to free swimming rainbow trout fry. This is being done in hopes of having fingerling trout to release in spring of 2009. During this whole process we are connecting kids with the outdoors, making them aware of their watersheds, the importance of protecting them and most everything else in them. To learn more about this wonderful project visit the TICNC website here .

Simms Rivershed Felt-Free Wading Boots Reviewed
Yesterday Tony Bishop of New Zealand's Bish On Fish blog gave his personal take on Simms's new Rivershed wading boots. Bishop, who bought the boots and wore them for a full week of fishing, says the boots are "85% good." "On 'clean boulders and rocks' the grip was solid. On slime covered rocks not quite as good, you have to be ready for the occasional boot slip. I had cheated a bit - I placed 9 studs around the edges of the sole. (Don't put studs in the centre of the sole, it stops the sole from 'sticking'.)"

Trout Unlimited Press Release calls for Cessation of Felt Sole Manufacturing
Timing is everything, it seems, even when it comes to fly fishing conservation. Just two days before the opening of the Fly Fishing Retailer Show in Denver, Trout Unlimited issued a press release asking manufacturers to cease production of felt-sole waders and boots by 2011. Protect Your WatersA great site with lots of information about managing and dealing with invasive aquatic plants, weeds, and more. This is a concern for all anglers, as we must constantly address the spreading of nuisance plants and organisms. They can "hitch a ride" on our clothing and gear, and then released into other bodies of water---and potentially become established and create drastic results. Learn more here .
