8-24-2010 FISHING REPORT - Guided Trip, Jerry Chostner, Sharon Giddens, Winston-Salem, NC, TN Tailwaters, we had a great day on the South Holston, even with an on at 11am release schedule. Guided Dr. Jerry Chostner, a customer of 20yrs, and his friend Sharon Giddens. We did really well right from the start, and just moved down river ahead of the rising water. We caught a bunch of fish, 40 or more total, fishing today was much like Saturday, but no rain, and few sulphurs but we caught most of our fish on tiny flies....tiny Blue Wings, Sparkle Midges, and blackfly adults. It was fantastic small fly fishing. We also caught a lot of fish sight casting with split backs or split cases, and caught some really nice fish up to 17" on it. Today was Sharon's first time ever fly fishing, she caught a dozen fish and caught the first 6 on a size 22 Blackfly, 7X, on flat water, and while the fish were rising....there are a lot of folks who fish here regularly that can't do that-- -nice work Sharon. I keep saying if you have the right fly, make a good presentation, you can do well. 12 fish on a first day anywhere is fantastic, and especially on this river. Jerry absolutely slayed them, catching a nice mix of browns and bows up to 17", we caught a bunch on tiny dries. Right now there's some absolutely fantastic morning fishing available with small flies, but you have to know where to look. If you like this kind of fishing, or would like to learn to sharpen your skills for upcoming small fly season (fall , winter) on most waters then now is a great time to take advantage of this. Enjoy several hours of this fishing and top it off with a sulphur flurry at the end. Let's go Fishing! Here are several pics of our day, nice job Sharon and Jerry!
8-25-2010 FISHING REPORT - Unavailable;PM Lesson Advanced Fly Tying, Mark Stauffer, Greensboro, we tied an assortment of patterns, mostly tailwater stuff.........which is my madness! Had a great evening as Mark has become one of the finest tyers I know of.....impeccable flies!!!
Simple yes.....easy to tie...yes....murderously effective.....? Absolutely. Midges and Soho sulphur grenades here. Made lots of victims with these guys this season.
An assortment of summer tailwater ammo......a sparsely tied cranefly pattern...the key entirely....sparse.
Summer Baetis and Blackflies.......a great part of any summer fly box. And not just tailwaters either. Most streams including the ones on our side of the mtns all have these two bugs.
8-26-2010 FISHING REPORT - Unavailable, will be out of town celebrating my Dad's birthday, whom I thank for getting me started with a love of fishing 37 years ago with a 12 inch rainbow....little did he know he would be starting such a passion for the young boy I was then. I love him and the passion for fishing just as strongly and more so as I did back then. Thanks Dad! He will be 72, and I value every day he is still with us.
8-27-2010 FISHING REPORT - Unavailable, should be a great weekend with good weather and lower humidity, a lot of places are finally clearing up/out after the recent rains /blow out in the mountains. The TN tailwaters are fishing well, as is the Smith River, small streams are in transition mode to fall after the next week or two as we are seeing some cooler temps. Terrestrials, blue winged olives, midges....small fly fishing at its best. Still smallie fishing too, poppers and popper /dropper rigs rule, plus JJs and clousers underneath. Should be a great weekend.
Spent some time on a wild/native stream in Avery County, we did very well. Got in a couple of hours of trout hiking.....a great thing to do this time of the year. thats exactly where we went…natives….what gorgeous fish and all fishing
on top. An incredible evening of surface action, tons of Yellow sallies,
Orange Spinners, and a few dorotheas….we had some great action and the
ticket was a size 16 Orange haystack….Heading up the mountain here in a
few, I guess we’d better get out of the woods as this is bear country.
Larry and Margot Pritchett and I wil be heading out again early in the
morning to float the lower South Holston.
Fishing for native fish in Avery county, water conditions....cool, levels good....in other words perfect.
Rainbows in pocket water.....fast and furious strikes...you snooze you lose....!
Great time, quite a few rainbows and browns, all wild, all gorgeous
These guys are the real deal, the real troopers of the high country as they earn their meals the honest way.
Wild browns are into beetles the way Jeff is into Ben and Jerry's Cherry Garcia.......they love them.
8-28-2010 FISHING REPORT - Guided Trip, Larry & Margot Pritchett, TN Tailwater float, Lower South Holston, Bluff City, TN,good day again on the SoHo with Larry and Margot Pritchett, we again had
success with tiny dry flies…have several new blackfly dries that are
smokin’ em. We got on two spots way off the beaten path and was into a
fantastic several hours of solid and consistent action. We caught a good
mix or both rainbows and browns and some good ones too. We caught fish
up to 16-17? mark and probably 30 or so. Margot had such a hot streak
going at one spot that I accused her of impersonating Joan Wulff. It was
that good, nailing one fish every casts many times in a row. We also
had on what appeared to be two ginormous fish but that broke off on 7X. One appeared to be
of the over 20? variety…..he ate one of my new size 22 midge patterns.
We fished a couple more spots then floated the water rise the rest of
the way to the takeout. A super day, there’s still plenty of great
fishing on the SoHo and the small fly dry fly action is as good as I
have seen it in my 25 yrs of fishing there. Hope your weekend was grand, here are some pics from our trip:
With the midday release our morning started very early. Our first three hours were foggy.....literally!
Margot hooking up on a nice rainbow. Fishing a tailout, we caught many fish here, Larry got into a fish that was 20" or better that eventually broke the fragile 7X tippet, he later landed a nice brown from under an overhang that was really sweet..!
We caught a lot of browns, got into a nice blackfly hatch, the fish were going nuts.....rising all over.......and we had just the ticket for them.
Nice brown on a Blackfly dry size 22, Larry hooked up. A couple of times we had doubles.
Margot hooked up to a nice brown of her own, these fish also ate a blackfly.
Chunky, well fed, and wild......such is the story of South Holston browns. Larry hooked up again.
Margot with a very nice brown, they were really munching the blackflies....which are an angling nemesis to many SoHo anglers.
Margot fishing to a pod of risers....Larry re-rigging after a break off. Larry caught several fish from this tailout, which is what I'd consider 'graduate school' level water. These fish aren't easy, Larry didn't care much about that, as he caught several there....nice work!
Alas, right again.....Larry hooked up to a nice fish that ate one of my #22 midge patterns, a new fly I have been using with clients lately. Tailouts with sand are home to many midges and these fish snack on midges all day long if nothing else noteworthy is coming off.
Margot casting to rising fish......Nice rainbow...we caught several of these too. This one ate a sulphur.
8-30-2010 FISHING REPORT - Unavailable, doing some webwork /addressing some website issues....fun! 8-31-2010 FISHING REPORT - Guided Trip, Rodger Holley, Winston-Salem, NC, TN Tailwaters, not as much dry fly fishing but we still caught a pile of fish…browns
and bows and we killed them sight nymphing with no strike indicator….it
was fun. Probably 30 fish or more, and ended the day catching some on
top on blackflies and a new CDC emerger I have come up with. The water
came up on us, so we headed back over to the NC side of the hill, Avery
Co, and we finished up catching some native small stream browns and
rainbows, all on an Orange Haystack. It was a great day and caught a lot
of fish. Want to catch some good small fly fishing ….? The SoHo is
rocking and is good fishing from sunup til mid-afternoon–let’s go
fishing! Here are some pics of our day:
An early east TN morning, we left at o'dark thirty to get to the river bright and early. It was a good plan, we were into fish within minutes after Rodger began casting. They ate one of my new split backs with gusto.
Brownies....they are wild and gorgeous, they are my favorite. And we caught a lot of them. They loved the split back and a new technique I showed Rodger for fishing them.
Rodger did well, the results of many good casts. We caught a load of browns the first place we got in. Not as many risers, but still quite a few. We stuck with what was producing fish.
I love the brownies, but will take as many rainbows as we can get .....we love them too. This one fought like a rocket, and gave Rodger a run for his money on the 7X. We hooked two very large browns, one that managed to throw the fly, the other was on briefly and shook it loose.
A wet camera, excuse the blurr, we caught fish regularly sight nymphing with the split backs right up until the water release came through at 11:45. Rodger had a nice fish on while the water was rising so we had to scamper to the bank and then chase the fish a little downstream. It was another brown.
After the water came up, we headed downriver to a couple of spots and got into some rising fish where we were able to land several more nice fish on tiny dry flies before the water came up on us.
Such a magical place......the fog adds a bit to the ambiance. The South Holston cast its spell on me many years ago and I have never gotten over it. The late day browns ate blackflies and one of my new sparkle midge emergers.
Dry flies, rising wild browns, flat water......all to my liking. Rodger caught 4 nice fish all on a flatwater stretch that isn't the easiest place to catch them....nice job Rodger! Thanks again for a great day. Here's a clip from fishing in the last week, fishing with tiny dry flies........>>>>>
